A path from first fractions to fraction operations

Start with a short assessment, choose the lessons your group needs, then use a different task to revisit each skill. Each unit includes printable student pages, separate teacher rubrics and a local record of learning evidence.

  1. Unit 1 · Grades 3 · 8 linked lessons

    Fractions: Wholes, Parts & Positions

Build fractions from equal parts, locate them by distance, and keep the same whole when crossing one.

Before you start: Count equal groups, compare lengths, and identify the endpoints of one whole.

  2. Unit 2 · Grades 3–4 · 9 linked lessons

    Equivalent Fractions & Defensible Comparisons

Preserve value while repartitioning, choose a comparison strategy, and justify decisions with equal wholes.

Before you start: Locate fractions on a number line and identify equal fractional units in the same whole.

  3. Unit 3 · Grades 4–5 · 6 linked lessons

Add, Subtract & Check Fraction Amounts

Compose equal units, rename unlike fractions, regroup mixed numbers and check whether an answer makes sense.

Before you start: Generate equivalent fractions, decompose a whole, and compare fractions to 1/2 and 1.

  4. Unit 4 · Grades 5 · 7 linked lessons

Fraction Products, Scaling & Two Kinds of Division

Interpret products and scaling, share a unit fraction among whole-number groups, and count unit-fraction servings.

Before you start: Generate equivalent fractions, multiply whole numbers, interpret area, and compose unit fractions into a whole.

Use the evidence to choose the next lesson

Give the six-item pre-assessment before teaching. Score each explanation with its item rubric, record an anonymous code, and look at three skill areas separately. Revisit the same skills with six parallel post-assessment tasks. A single total can hide a specific need, so groups and next lessons follow the skill evidence.

The complete lessons are 45 minutes each; teach the full sequence or select lessons after checking prerequisites. For a shorter response, use a 10–15 minute intervention. Explore a representation together with the fraction models.
